Julie Turner, Wildlife Gardening Officer says, "Our Christmas festivities have come about as a result of the combination of the twin celebrations of the birth of Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem at this time of year about 2000 years ago and the pagan Midwinter Festivals held to banish darkness at the time of the Winter Solstice [shortest day of the year]. The two events seem to be poles apart, but the theme common to both is hope, and after the events of 2009, hope is much needed, so why not give your jaded spirits a lift by joining in with one of workparties. A day spent in the open air on a crisp winter day gives a real buzz and to know that, at the same time, you have been making a worthwhile contribution to the living conditions of the residents on our reserves is an added bonus."
