Caroline Bailey, Reserves Biodiversity Officer says, "Every year seems to be a 'Year of….' and we cannot become involved in all of them, but the International Year of Biodiversity is a global campaign launched by the UN to promote a better understanding of biodiversity and highlight biodiversity loss, which has been identified as bordering on catastrophic. Biodiversity sums up the great variety of life on our planet - it's everything from minute microbes to mighty whales - as well as the habitats they depend on. The role of human beings in balancing all those factors and, regrettably, in upsetting those same factors cannot be overstated, so the work that we carry out in managing our reserves to be in optimum condition for all the residents, from soil microbes to mighty oaks, from worms to water voles is incredibly important - and every bit of help counts. You are as much part of the rich tapestry of British biodiversity as the plants now emerging from their winter dormancy or the birds busy with nesting - so why not come along to one of our workshops and find out how you can play your part in making IYB - UK a year to remember."
