Wildlife &
Habitats

In Shakespeare's time, Warwickshire was very
different from today. There were more woods, meadows, ponds and
hedgerows!
"When daisies
pied and violets blue,
And lady smocks all silver-white,
And cuckoo-buds of yellow hue,
Do paint the meadows with delight"
William
Shakespeare,
Love's Labours Lost (c 1598)
In Shakespeare's day, nature was all around
and everyone knew about wildlife. Today our growing population has
changed most of the land to provide more houses, more roads, more
industry. Even the fields have been changed to produce more food,
using fertilisers and pesticides.
These changes have destroyed many vital
habitats needed for wildlife to survive.
Not all has been lost, however, and with
your help more could be saved.
You can help in many ways:
by Adopting a
Species with our fun scheme
by finding out about our
community projects
by
keeping an eye out for developments that threaten local
wildlife sites
by taking action to survey your own
village or neighbourhood - find out what wildlife is
there
by
helping a local community group to clear a pond,
or plant a spinney
by getting involved with a local nature
reserve
by becoming a 'Media Monitor' and
sending the Trust press cuttings
by joining the
Trust as a member, making a donation, or leaving a
legacy
by
donating to our
